Description
The index is intended to provide access to UDC classes set out in the schedule.
It is not intended as a substitute for the schedule, and should never be used alone for classification.
The index is intended to provide a tool for people seeking material in databases ir collections classified by UDC number.
It enables fast access to UDC classes through specially constructed index terms.
It is not a thesaurus, and although entries are taken from UDC descriptions, examples etc, the majority have had to be changed in some way to provide usable index entries.
This means that index terms cannot be used to search for existing UDC descriptions in a database, although they could be used as the basis of a keyword field.
The subject index is arranged in word-by-word alphabetical order.
Numbers or symbols that begin entries are spelt out, e.g. beta radiation.
Conjunctions etc, that begin subentries (e.g and, of, the, for, by) are kept to a minimum and ignored in filing.
Hyphens are also ignored in filing. For example,

deposits as fuels
gaseous insulants
